A hamlet, Suryanelli is also the point of departure for guests seeking to explore the mountains and forests in the area, part of a very fragile eco -system with numerous rivulets and streams flowing through reserve forests. The forests are home to the endangered Niligiri Tahr, Tigers, Asian Elephants, Giant Squirrels, besides a fascinating variety of bird species, both, endemic and migratory.
One continues, ascending to where the western ghat mountains form an escarpment that descends into the plains below. Packs of cloud and mist float past through the day accompanied by a gentle breeze that can transform into wind that takes on a formidable force.
